Our SEMH Support Service for Schools team works in partnership with the Local Authority and with Schools. The expert team helps to address the complex challenges presented by pupils with SEMH while in a mainstream settings.

Together, we seek to ensure that the needs of these students are identified and understood by all.

Bromley Trust Academy (BTA) Outreach

Supporting schools to prevent exclusion and strengthen inclusive practice

Bromley Trust Academy's Outreach Team works in partnership with mainstream schools to support pupils who are at risk of exclusion and those returning to mainstream education following an alternative provision placement. Our preventative, needs-led approach is rooted in safeguarding, SEND, trauma-informed practice and a strong understanding of behaviour as communication.

Based at BTA Midfield, our team includes experienced specialist teachers and practitioners with significant senior leadership experience across mainstream, specialist and alternative provision settings, including SENCO and DSL expertise. We work closely with commissioned Speech and Language Therapy services and Bromley Educational Psychologists to provide holistic support tailored to individual pupils, staff teams and schools.

BTA Outreach is proud to be part of the Experts at Hand initiative, which highlights the important role Alternative Provision outreach services play in supporting inclusion, building school capacity and preventing exclusions. Through consultation, coaching, training and direct intervention, we help schools develop sustainable approaches that enable vulnerable learners to succeed.

Alongside individual pupil support, we offer a range of evidence-informed CPD, coaching and INSET training. Through funding from the London Mayor's Violence Reduction Unit, we also provide Sports Coach Mentoring to support vulnerable young people and to promote their positive engagement in education.

The 10 Principles of LSEAT Good Practice

1. Safeguarding first – awareness that young people often display behaviours that challenge because they are unsafe or living in adverse circumstances
2. Systemic approach – understanding the young person holistically, knowing their story, and understanding the context in which the behaviour which challenges is occurring
3. Trauma informed – full awareness of the impact that trauma can have on a person's behaviour, and knowing the most effective ways of managing this
4. Child-centred – using pupil voice to inform decisions and ensuring that the best interests of the child are always considered as the priority
5. Evidence-based – using up to date research and evidence-based approaches to underpin everything we do
6. The Graduated Approach – understanding persistently challenging behaviour as an indicator of unmet needs and working according to the Code of Practice/Assess Plan Do Review
7. Flexible needs-led support – tailoring and individualising support according to the needs of students and those working with them
8. Building Capacity in the School System – through secondment, CPD, INSET training, coaching, mentoring and policy development
9. Collective Responsibility – recognising that exclusions represent challenges across a range of systems and working in partnership to improve outcomes
10. Collaborative multi-agency working – using a Team Around the Child approach with effective information sharing at its heart
